Based on Velázquez's famous originals of circa 1639-41, believed to have been painted as decoration for the royal hunting lodge the Torre de la Parada, where they are recorded in an inventory of 1701 (see J. López-Rey, Velázquez Catalogue Raisonné, Cologne 1996, vol. II, pp. 226-29, cat. nos. 92 & 93, reproduced).
