Catalogue Note
This picture originally formed part of a set of three works by Orrente, illustrating The Story of Noah and The Great Flood, in the collection of Don José Madrazo, Madrid, during the mid-19th century. The other two scenes, of the same dimensions and numbered 403 and 404 within the collection, represented The Entrance of the Animals into the Ark and The Great Flood.
Don José Madrazo y Agudo was a distinguished painter in his own right. He became Director of the Museo del Prado and owned an important library and collection of Old Master Paintings.
