Possibly commissioned by Duke Ernst II von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg, thence by descent;
Schloss Greinburg, Austria.

Catalogue Note

Tischbein must have painted the present set of three in commission for Duke Ernst II von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg. The contact between the artist and the duke was mediated by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), and Tischbein was sent to Rome in January 1783 by the Duke. In this period he painted his first work for Duke Ernst, Conradin of Swabia and Frederick of Baden in Prison, now in the Schloß Museum, Gotha.
