Heinrich von Angeli was a pupil of the Academies of Vienna and Düsseldorf where he studied under M. Leutze. The first years of his career he concentrated on historical painting in the succession of Hans Makart and was employed by the courts of Bavaria and Austria. From 1870 he eventually turned to portraiture and became one of the most sought after portraitists of his time. His sitters estimated his elegant style, his noble compositions and brilliant costumes and surroundings. Angeli was much in demand as an artist during his lifetime. Among his sitters was the high aristocracy of the late 19th century. Besides Emperor Wilhelm I he also painted Emperor Friedrich and Empress Victoria, Emperor Wilhelm II, Queen Victoria of England, Empress Maria Feodorowna of Russia and many others.
