Valerie June Carter was born on June 23, 1929 in Maces Springs, Virginia. While this was an area that locals called "Poor Valley," June's childhood was rich in the music of her mother, cousins and sisters and in the generosity of her father, Ezra ("Eck"), who made sure that his daughters were "the best-dressed, best-scrubbed, best-fed girls in all the valley" per Mark Zwonitzer's book, Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone.
