Catalogue Note
Miniature watercolor portraits on paper by the Shutes are extremely rare, with fewer than a handful known to exist. The most similar related example to the miniature portrait of Adeline Bartlett is one of an unidentified young woman in the collection of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center in Williamsburg (Virginia), illustrated in Beatrix T. Rumford, Gen. Ed., American Folk Portraits, Paintings and Drawings from the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center, Boston, 1981, pp. 183-184, fig. 158.
