Catalogue Note

Carl Sandburg married Steichen's sister Lilian (Paula) in June 1908, and the two men were close colleagues and friends throughout their lives. One of the most important early books on Steichen's life and work was Sandburg's Steichen The Photographer (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1929).

Steichen gave this print to the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock, North Carolina, in appreciation for Sandburg's funeral service held there in July 1967.
