Catalogue Note

This album was, it appears, complied by Admiral Sir Charles Talbot, K.C.B., R.N., 1801-1876 (see illustration, standing last on right), or a member of his family, and has a strong naval theme. It includes four studies attributed to F.E. Meredith (of HMS Algiers), a salt print entitled 'A Finlander's Cottage in the Alands Isles Ledsund/August 1854' and three Lightly Albumenised Salt Prints of Simon's Bay, South Africa (1859). It includes, among other unattributed photographs, a view of Gibraltar, one of Hong Kong, a view of the crew aboard the Royal Alfred, studies of various British naval ships, a view of Nelson's monument at Great Yarmouth, views of Admiralty House, Sheerness, and Halifax (Nova Scotia), and two landscape studies titled 'Trees on the Sid - Devon' and 'Watergate - Raglan Castle'. There is a small study of the 'Russian Eagle', a double-headed relief from, it is thought, the Russian Admiralty in the Crimea. The album also has a small number of portraits including a study of the 2nd Baron Raglan and his four sons (1867). A small number of the photographs are after paintings or drawings.
