Catalogue Note
Shrvan Belgola, in the region of Karnataka, is one of the oldest and most important Jain pilgrim centres in India. The colossal statue of Lord Gomateshwara, a Jain saint, is seventeen metres high and is said to be carved from one block of stone. It is thought to date from 981 A.D. and is the work of Aristanemi. Chamundaraya, a general and minister of the Ganga King Rachamatta installed it in its present location, on the top of Indragiri Hill, in 983 A.D..
