Catalogue Note

The English publisher William Heinemann (1863-1920) founded his own firm in 1890. Heinemann, with Wolcott Balastier, had published in October 1891 Wilde's Intentions in the paperback English Library edition issued from Leipzig. Over a lunch on 16 October 1891 (when Wilde wore black dress to mourn his birthday) Wilde was persuaded by Heinemann to agree to write a preface for two plays by Maeterlinck which Heinemann was publishing in English translation. Since "the mood for it" continued to elude him, Wilde never did write the preface.

This letter is unpublished (not in Complete Letters).
