Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dr. Claudia Nordhoff for endorsing the attribution to Hackert on the basis of photographs. Another version of this composition, which omits the tree, exists in the Staatliche Museen Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin (see C. Nordhoff & H. Reimer, Jakob Phillipp Hackert 1737-1807, Verzeichnis seiner werke, Berlin 1994, vol. II, pp. 171-2, cat. no. 357, reproduced vol. II, plate 179). The form of the monogram(?) is not otherwise known. As Dr. Nordhoff points out, many such animal studies were painted by Hackert after his move to Florence in 1800.
