Catalogue Note
Like his father Pierre Patel the Elder (c.1605-1676), Pierre-Antoine specialised in painting landscapes in the classical tradition first begun by Claude. Pierre-Antoine produced a large quantity of gouaches, probably to satisfy an eager clientele, and the formula of combining architectural ruins with a sweeping landscape vista beyond, reappears in the countless variations on the theme throughout his career (compare, for example, his signed and dated landscape of 1698 in a French private collection; N. Coural, Les Patel. Pierre Patel (1605-1676) et ses fils, Pairs 2001, pp. 220-221, cat. no. PAP 38, reproduced p. 221).
