Catalogue Note

This distinctive panel is probably an early work by Saftleven, perhaps dating from the early 1640s.  A comparable coastal scene, depicting Christ preaching on the sea of Galilee, also signed in monogram and dated 1642, is in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (reproduced in W. Schutz, Herman Saftleven 1609-85, Berlin/New York 1982, p. 132, no. 26, fig. 12).
