Catalogue Note

This composition reflects an original by Berchem (untraced), of slightly larger dimensions and also on canvas, exhibited in London, British Institution, 1828, no. 81, and later sold in Berlin, Goldschmidt, 27 April 1909, lot 51 (C. Hofstede de Groot, A Catalogue RaisonnĂ©..., vol. IX, Esslingen 1926, p. 141, no. 311). Numerous copies after the composition exist, almost all of which are not signed and most of which are probably from the artist's studio: see, for example, the painting sold, London, Phillips, 1 July 1997, lot 177; another in the Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro, inv. 1939.220; and a third in the collection of the Marquess of Exeter, Barrowfield Lodge (recorded as signed in the Witt Library).
