Catalogue Note

Although formerly attributed to Egbert van Heemskerck, this is a typical work by Naiveu, dating from well after his move from Leiden to Amsterdam in 1678.  The subject is a scene from a play or a harlequinade, as the curtains that frame the scene suggest.
