Giuseppe Angeli, Venice 1712 - 1798

The composition derives from a painting formerly in the collection of Arturo Spender, Venice, which was included by Pallucchini in his 1934 monograph on Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (see R. Pallucchini, Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, Bologna 1937, pp. 30-31, 98, reproduced fig. 30), but which was re-attributed in the same year by Göring (see M. Göring, Die Tätigkeit der Venezianer Maler Piazzetta und Pittoni für den Kurfürsten Clemens August von Köln, Westfalen 1934) to Piazzetta's close follower Domenico Maggiotto.
