Catalogue Note
The style of this painting is comparable to other portraits by Paris Bordone painted during the 1520s. The soft handling of the face and, in particular, of the hair and beard may be compared to that in his signed and dated Portrait of a man of 1523 or the Portrait of a jeweller with a woman, datable to the 1520s, both in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (see G. Fossaluzza, "Qualche recupero al Catalogo Ritrattistico del Bordon", in Paris Bordon e il suo tempo. Atti del Convegno Internazionale di Studi (Treviso 28-30 October 1985), Treviso 1987, pp. 184 and 186, figs. 1 and 5). An alternative attribution to a northern artist, working in Venice in circa 1530 and with a probable knowledge of Bordone's portraits, has also been suggested.
