The composition relates to a painting (19 by 14 cm.) given to Gerrit Dou now in the Mauritshuis, The Hague (see H.R. Hoetink, The Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis, The Hague 1985, p. 358, no. 33, reproduced), which is also known in a number of replicas, including a painting in the Musée de Besançon (Hofstede de Groot, no. 231).
