Catalogue Note

Francken frequently made use of similar grisaille or monochrome scenes as borders for his paintings. Another painting with the same scenes surrounding a Crucifixion in a similarly arched format was sold London, Christie's, 9 July 1993,lot 148 for ё11,000. The figures of the Four Evangelists are derived from prints by Agostino Veneziano after Giulio Romano (Bartsch, 26, nos. 92-95).
