The early landscapes of Vinckboons, with their dense foliage and river vistas, are greatly indebted to those produced at a slightly earlier date by the Frankenthal painter Gillis van Coninxloo, to whom this painting was formerly attributed. Vinckboons may well have known Coninxloo, for the latter had settled in Amsterdam by 1595. The handling of the landscape details and of the figures in particular, however, find ready parallels in Vinckboons's youthful landscapes, such as the Landscape with musicians at the edge of a wood of circa 1601 in the Schönborn collection at Pommersfelden, or the Landscape on the margin of a wood now in the National Museum in Warsaw, probably painted towards the end of the same decade (both reproduced in K. Goossens, David Vinckboons, Soest 1977, pp. 18, 82-3, fig. 7 and plate 7).
