Catalogue Note

Salimbeni, togther with his half-brother Francesco Vanni, was the leading exponent of the late mannerist style in his native Siena. As the catalogue of the 1968 Siena exhibition notes, this painting is a finished small-scale work and undoubtedly originally intended for private devotion.
