Catalogue Note

The son of Maria Salviati, a grand-daughter of Lorenzo il Magnifico, and Giovanni delle Bande Nere, Cosimo I was elected Duke of Florence in 1537. He is shown here wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece, which he received in 1545. In 1570 he was crowned Grand Duke of Tuscany by Pope Pius V. The portrait is a conflation of various designs originating from the Bronzino workshop.
