The Master of the Langmatt Foundation Views (Apollonio Domenichini) Active in Venice during the second and third quarters of the 18th Century

The composition of this painting corresponds closely with a slightly smaller view by the artist in his eponymous series of views of Venice in the Langmatt Foundation in Zurich, but with alterations in the foreground details. Another closely related version was sold London, Christie's 7 July 2000, lot 82, as one of a pair with a view of the Bacino di San Marco.  A terminus ante quem can be established for the present work by the depiction of the Torre dell'Orologio before the addition of Giorgio Massari's second attic storey in 1755.
The artist has recently been identified as Apollonio Domenichini (Venice c. 1715-c.1770), a follower of Luca Carlevarijs and Canaletto whose name appears in the registers of the fraglia  (corporation) of Venetian painters in 1757. Domenichini, who was known to his contemporaries as `Menichino', achieved some reputation as a painter of vedute of Venice and its environs.
