Catalogue Note
Even though he trained as a history painter, De Marne quickly specialised in painting genre scenes and landscapes, heavily influenced by Dutch Golden Age artists such as Aelbert Cuyp, Adriaen van Ostade and Karel Dujardin. He particularly enjoyed treating street scenes or village fairs, of which this work is a fine example.
