Catalogue Note

This little panel appears to be by the same hand as a painting in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 383), tentatively given to Lavinia Fontana in the Louvre catalogue (A. Brejon de Lavergnée & D. Thiébaut, Catalogue sommaire illustré des peintures du musée du Louvre. vol. II. Italie, Espagne, Allemagne, Grande-Bretagne et divers, Paris 1981, p. 175, reproduced) but more recently given to Prospero Fontana by Vera Fortunati Pierantonio (Pittura bolognese del '500, Bologna 1986, p. 351, reproduced p. 402).

The present painting bore a traditional attribution to Parmigianino and, interestingly, the Louvre picture was also formerly ascribed to him.
