Catalogue Note

This composition is comparable in execution to a painting also depicting Glasses and smoking implements on a table by Van de Velde, which is signed and dated 1653, in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (see N.R.A. Vroom, A Modest Message, Schiedam 1980, vol II, p. 133, cat. no. 688, reproduced vol. I, fig. 304).
