Catalogue Note
Swanevelt painted highly distinctive Southern landscapes seen in windy weather in the years around 1650. Another comparable picture, also dated 1649, was sold in London, Christie's, 18 March 1955, lot 99. These landscapes anticipate by some 150 years the stormy Italianate subjects of Hendrick Voogd and Simon Denis, and are so similar to them, that it would be hard to deny that they had exerted a strong influence.
