Catalogue Note

A studio replica of an original composition by Vrancx, which possibly formed part of a series of the Months or Seasons. The present work would have represented the month of May, and indeed another studio version of this picture bearing the inscription "MAIO" was sold at Castle Howard, Sotheby's, 6 April 1996, lot 61.
