Catalogue Note

Unlike the realistic landscapes of his Haarlem period (1612 - circa 1618), the present scene by Esaias van de Velde is almost certainly imaginary. The rocky, rugged landscape may have been inspired by the work of Roelandt Savery and Gillis Claesz. de Hondecoeter and a number of features within the scene recur (with some variations) in other works by Van de Velde of a similar date. For example, the rocky outcrop is repeated in a painting, signed and dated 1626, in the Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig (see G. Keyes, under Literature, p. 164, cat. no. 170, reproduced plate 152); and the stone bridge is repeated in a drawing, signed and dated 1627, in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland (op. cit., pp. 274-5, cat. no. D193, reproduced plate 173).
