Catalogue Note
This probably formed part of a set of Seasons or Months. When with Robert Finck in 1976 it had a signed pendant entitled Danse autour de l'arbre de Mai, which perhaps, as Thiéry & Meerendre suggested, represented Spring, and the present picture Autumn (see under Literature, pp. 8-9, reproduced in colour p. 6). Both pictures are comparable in tone, sharing the same high colour key, and are probably late works, painted well after Jan Brueghel's influence on Gysels had waned.
