Catalogue Note
Born in St Goar, Philipp Peter Roos was the eldest son and probable pupil of the painter Johann Heinirich Roos. He travelled to Italy in 1677, where he was to study with Giacinto Brandi and whose daughter he married. In 1684-5 he bought a house outside Tivoli, hence his sopranome. From the 1690's he was to spend increasing time in Rome.
The present picture may be compared to Roos's Landscape with a goat and sheep, listed By Jedding as in a Private Collection, Hamburg (see H. Jedding, Johann Heinrich Roos, Mainz 1998, p. 197 reproduced plate 273).
