Catalogue Note
A painting by Orizzonte of similar format and composition as the view of the waterfall is reproduced by Andrea Busiri Vici (see A. Busiri Vici, Jan Frans van Bloemen, Orrizante e l'origine del paesaggio romano settecentesco, Rome 1974, cat. nos. 365 and 366). Each of the present works has an old label attached to the reverse of the stretchers which describes the paintings in what appears to be an eighteenth-century hand. The inscriptions are nearly the same (where they differ is here noted by the inclusion of the revelant text in brackets): they read 'Deux Tableaux de 4 pieds de haut sur 3 de large un representant...Villa de Tyvoli [sic] la petit chute deau et paysage voisin l ville avec figures Lautre representant la vue de campagne et paysage près Vicovaro sur la même route de Tyvoli [sic] [avec figures et troupeaux]. chef d'oeuvre d'apres nature par Orizzonte Eleve de Gaspard Poussin. prix 120 Louis les deux [Cyderant [sic] de la Ga(lerie) de feu...table Colonna a R(ome)].'
