Catalogue Note

This portrait historisée bears strong resemblances to the description of a painting showing Mademoiselle de la Vallière as Venus holding an apple with Cupid holding a mirror and two doves, which was sold Paris, 16-17 March 1870, lot 85 (see L. Nikolenko, Pierre Mignard. The Portrait Painter of the Grand Siècle, Munich 1983, p. 124, cat. no. 54).
