Catalogue Note
Reinier Nooms, called Zeeman (Seaman) reached the peak of his career in the middle of the 17th Century and was surely one of Amsterdam's most distinguished and renowned marine painters. Although we have no contemporary account concerning his reputation, Nooms's delicately composed town -and seascapes undoubtedly contributed to the fame of the Dutch capital in particular and the Seven Provinces in general. He was also known for his many prolific topographical etchings, especially of his native town.
Amsterdam had various toll-houses on the entrance from the river IJ to the city. The toll-houses as depicted here were probably located near the Prins Hendrikkade and the Oudezijds Waal (replaced in 1830 by the Oosterdok).
