Catalogue Note
This calm marine is rare in style within the œuvre of Blanckerhoff. It should probably be placed rather late in his career, after his return from Italy in 1659. His seascapes are characterized by the use of a muted grey palette, and the rendering of subtle atmospheric effects, which also can be seen in the diffused lighting of the coastline. Although no direct comparisons can be made, the small waves are painted in a similar foamy way as for example in the monogrammed Dutch shipping in a rough sea, sold New York, Sotheby's, 25 January 2001, lot 166. The use of similar subdued light as in the present painting can be seen in the monogrammed painting Shipping before a Harbour, sold Paris, Tajan, 22 June 1922, lot 51.
