This picture, dated 1606, was painted before Spain and the northern provinces agreed to an armistice in 1609. In 1585 Antwerp was conquered by the Spaniards under Alexander Farnese and thus only the Catholic faith was recognized. The re-catholization of Antwerp left its mark on the arts, which is also visible in the early oeuvre of Francken the Younger. Painted when he was twenty-five, this is one of his rare dated biblical scenes from his middle period (from circa 1610-1620).

Härting mentions only two dated pictures from 1606, the present work and a Christ on the Cross, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. 1078; see Literature below, pp. 291 and 381).
