An almost identical composition, signed and dated 1609, also on copper, was sold Frankfurt-am-Main, Bangel, 28 June 1938, lot 45 (see U. Härting, Frans Francken der Jüngere (1581-1642), Freren 1989, pp. 276-7, no. 175, reproduced); there are minor differences with the present painting, for example in the depiction of the Cross.
