Catalogue Note
The original of this composition is not known but it exists in many contemporary and later copies. The present work seems to be one of the better studio versions with some areas of very good quality probably painted by Jan Weenix himself, e.g. the birds and objects in the lower foreground, the opium poppy and foliage on the right. This has been confirmed by Fred G. Meijer on the basis of first hand inspection. The presumed original, signed and dated 170(?), is recorded in a Munich private collection.
This lot is offered with a photocopy of a photo certificate by Dr W. Bernt, dated April 1979, stating this work to be by Weenix.
