Catalogue Note
Otto Naumann compares this painting with two works by the artist's father Frans van Mieris the Elder (1635-1681): a signed Man holding a large roemer from 1668, present whereabouts unknown (see Literature below, Naumann, vol. II, pp. 87-8, cat. no. 72) and a Man drinking and a woman offering him a fish, recorded in a private collection, Germany in 1980 (ibid., p. 104, cat. no. 93). According to Naumann the latter picture was probably finished by Willem van Mieris.
