Catalogue Note
This lot is accompagnied by a copy of a certificate believed to have been written by Georges Marlier in the 1950s, stating this work to be by Quinten Massijs (1456-1530). He dates it to the early 1520s and compares it stylistically to other works by the Antwerp master and his studio such as a Virgin and Child, included in the Warneck sale, Paris in 1926 and subsequently sold, Monaco, Christie's, 4 December 1993, lot 12 (see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, vol. VII, Leiden/Brussels 1971, p. 62, no. 22, reproduced plate 27).
The faces and figural types of the Virgin and Child can also be compared to those of a Virgin and Child, in the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (inv. no. 2460).
