Catalogue Note
Mattheus Terwesten, son of an Augsburg gold- and silversmith, was taught by his elder brother Augustinus, Willem Doudijns and Daniel Mijtens the Younger. He fulfilled a need for decorative painters in early-18th Century The Hague. Terwesten's style varied little throughout his career; this work can be compared with a similar composition of Andromeda, dated 1697, in the Herzog-Anton-Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig (inv. no. 296).
