Engraving, circa 1617, by Jacob Matham, a very good impression of the third (final) state, on paper with an IHS watermark, with narrow margins, trimmed to platemark in upper left corner, a small backed paper loss at lower right edge just extending into platemark, a few repaired tears at edges (the longest measuring circa 30mm), thinly backed along extreme edges of sheet verso, other minor defects

Catalogue Note

According to Hirschmann, this engraving was made after a self-portrait by Goltzius left unfinished after his death (cf.: Otto Hirschmann, Verzeichnis des Graphischen Werks von Hendrick Goltzius 1558-1617, Braunschweig: Klinkhardt & Biermann, 1976, p.167). The face and the collar are comparable to the silverpoint drawing in the same direction by Goltzius dated 1615 in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin.
