Engraving, 1558, after Giulio Romano, Lewis' second state (of five), with the change in the date but before any publisher's address, on paper with a Bunch of Grapes watermark (cf.L.27), with narrow margins, trimmed just within platemark in places at right, a central vertical fold, otherwise in good condition

Catalogue Note

This engraving is based on a drawing by Giulio Romano for a fresco in the Palazzo del Te in Mantua. It reproduces one of a series of eleven scenes in the Loggia of the Grotto, painted about 1531, that seem to represent an allegory of human life.
