Catalogue Note
This drawing has a traditional attribution to Francesco Cozza on the old mount, but at present, only one drawing is known which can be securely given to Cozza, a preparatory drawing with differences for the artist's fresco in the Roman church of Sant' Agnese in Agone, with an old attribution on the mount: Cozza scolaro del Domenichino, now in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich (see L. Trezzani, Francesco Cozza, Rome 1981, under cat.no. 17, illustrated fig. 23b). The style of the present drawing seems, however, closer to that of the Modenese artist Sigismondo Caula.
