Catalogue Note

Drawings of birds by Le Moyne de Morgues are extremely rare; see also lots 31, 48 and 55, and introduction on pp. 38-39 of the present catalogue.  Birds do, however, appear among the woodcuts in the 1586 publication, La Clef des Champs, and one of these prints in fact depicts a kingfisher together with a yellowhammer on the same page (see P. Hulton, op.cit., vol.I, cat.nos. 39-40, and vol.II, pl. 76b).
