Catalogue Note

In 1645 Lambert Doomer journeyed to France, to visit his two brothers who were living in Nantes.  He was joined there in May of the following year by his fellow landscapist, Willem Schellinks, and the two artists then made a sketching trip along the Loire.  Doomer made many drawings at this time, mostly in black chalk, which he seems to have worked up at a later date.  More than 20 years later, he also made a large series of elaborate, highly finished repetitions of his French drawings, usually on a distinctive ledger paper.  Though clearly executed in the artist's later style, some of those repetitions are, confusingly, genuinely signed and dated 1645 or '46 on the reverse, referring presumably to the date when the original sketch was made.

Although no other version of this drawing is known, it does appear to depict a French scene, in which case this too must be a later work, based on a lost travel sketch from 1645-6.
