Catalogue Note
Although Everdingen made large numbers of complete, signed drawings of this type, most of them are executed in pen and monochrome wash. Watercolours such as this are in fact relatively rare. Another good example, slightly smaller than this, was sold, London, Sotheby's, 8 July 1998, lot 106, while a splendid large river scene was formerly in the Klaver collection (sold Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 10 May 1994, lot 58). A monochrome variant of this view, in reverse and with different background details, is in Hamburg (Kunsthalle, inv. nr. 21905).
