Catalogue Note
This large, freely executed drawing was formerly attributed to Jan Breughel the Elder, but the handling is rather different from that artist's style. Although it is certainly by one of the numerous talented landscape painters working in the same artistic milieu as Breughel, the individual drawing styles of those landscapists remain little studied, and their works can be extremely hard to differentiate.
