Catalogue Note
The attribution to Salvator Rosa was confirmed by Michael Mahoney, from a photograph, in a letter to the present owner. The very pictorial use of wash differentiates this study, possibly drawn from life, from those executed in pen and ink alone, and brings it closer in spirit to Rosa's studies of heads in coloured chalks (see M. Mahoney, The Drawings of Salvator Rosa, New York 1977, vol. II, figs. 31.1 to 31.11).
