Catalogue Note

Guardi painted a number of versions and variants of this composition, incorporating different combinations of elements seen here, such as the arch with a view to a house, the wall to the right and the figures (see A. Morassi, Guardi, Venice 1973, vol. I, nos. 966, 967, 968, 970, 971;  vol. II., figs. 846, 850, 851, 852, 855).  This very quick sketch with its fluent use of wash cannot, however, be directly linked with any of these paintings.  The use of wash is very similar to that in a sketch of a Sottoportico in the Correr Museum, Venice (see A. Morassi, Guardi, I Disegni, Venice 1975, no. 575, fig. 564).

Sold in an attractive carved and gilded eighteenth-century French frame.
